This photograph plays with the mind. It is a simply photograph, a reality that is common for most people, of someone riding a bike along a road; however, there is a twist. The twist plays with one's mind, as there is a cut as if scissors were taken and simply cut the road. The dotted line is also something that is seen daily by people and that is what Johansson does, he takes every day scenes and combines them. This creates a sense of normality to the abnormality. We usually see a road everyday and he added the scissor lines to create the illusion. The way he does this illusion can be quite simply as he just combined photographs, but this can also be difficult as the photograph have to be taken with the same lighting to make the end photograph successful.
This project allowed me to really understand how to manipulate the sun. I never thought about using an umbrella until this tutorial I saw, which used one in order to add more to the photograph. It was a unique twist to the normal silhouette of a girl. After the photo was taken, I edited the photograph in camera raw and photoshop, where the vibrance of the red umbrella was made. Also, the darkness was created in photoshop. I learned a lot from this project in how to manipulate the sun and edit the photo in order to create a compelling silhouette.
The success of Frans Lanting comes with the many principles of photography that he implements in his work. This jaguar photograph captivates the eye for many reasons. One is thanks to the rule of thirds, which is when the subject is aligned with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or the bottom line. This creates a compelling photograph in which the viewer is drawn to the jaguar's eye. There is also a color pop that is present as the cheetah has a contrasting orange/yellow color next to the green leaves.
Dorothea Lange is notorious for capturing photos of farmers during the Great Depression. This particular photograph by Lange illustrates the harsh times that people - farmers - had to go through. In the photo, there is an overwhelming sense of hardship, as the workers look tired and depressed. The use of making the photograph black and white really emphasizes how difficult it was during the Great Depression.
This photograph by Jodhie Panggalih encompasses many elements that captivate the eye. Even though this simply is a photo of someone jumping, it is compelling. Panggalih's use of the sun creating the dark silhouette of not only the boy, but the boat he is jumping off, along with the mountains in the backdrop. The intensity of the vibrant colors throughout the photograph creates emphasis of the boy jumping. Not only is there vibrant colors, emphasis, but the boy has created lines for the eye to follow. This photograph is a great representation of a silhouette photography due to it encompasses many elements of photography.
Mount Williamson was the perfect subject for one of Ansel's many captivating photographs. He uses the perspective of the never ending rocks to create a point though the symmetrical mountains. The mountains and rocks also have shape that draw the eye in. The use of white and black also create a contrast as the eye is compelled to the many elements in this photograph.
